How to Buy
If you'd like to buy one of the artworks featured on our site, click the "Make an Enquiry" link or call us. We can then finalise the details of your purchase and based on this, confirm a price to you.
What we need to know to finalise the price
- Would you like the painting stretched on a frame ready to hang, rolled in a tube or cartoned?
- How are you paying for the artwork – as credit cards attract varying surcharges.
- How is the painting to be delivered?
- Or are you picking the artwork up from the gallery?
What is the cheapest way I can get my artwork?
The cheapest way to get your artwork is to use a payment method that attracts the least bank fees / surcharges, pick your painting up from the gallery and organise your own stretching of the canvas.
Obtaining a refund on your Australian Sales Tax (Goods and Services Tax)
For overseas visitors buying artwork in Australia, you must take the artwork with you in person in order to claim back the 10% Goods and Services Tax (GST) at the airport. Ask us for details.
For purchases made from outside Australia we can supply the goods to you without Australian sales tax (ie, Tax Free). You may be liable for taxes when the goods enter into your country.
How can I pay for my artwork?
- Cash (AUD only)
- EFTPOS (Australia only)
- Credit Card (Visa, Mastercard, American Express)
- Direct transfers into our bank account (Please call us ahead to arrange this kind of payment).
- Bank Cheque in AUD
- Personal or company cheques in AUD with a valid Australian Driver's licence.
Artworks cannot be released until funds are received into our bank account.
Can the artworks come off their stretcher frames?
All non-ochre artworks can come off their stretcher frames and be rolled in a tube. We recommend that you use an experienced canvas stretcher to re-stretch the artwork.
Delivery Options
We are happy to help organise delivery of your artwork. Following are some options that we have used and have found to be successful:
Artwork on stretched frame - we use a specialist art carrier for national and international deliveries.
Artwork rolled in a tube - there are many options. We firstly recommend you take the artwork with you and check it in as oversize luggage (there is usually no charge for this provided it is within your overall luggage allowance). These days most airlines will not allow you take large tubes on board aircraft.
If taking an artwork with you in person is not an option we use TNT couriers to send artworks in tubes.
In all cases with freight we will provide you with the tracking numbers etc so that you can check where your delivery is.
We do not add any service fees etc to delivery and wherever possible we would prefer you to pay the delivery company directly.
What if I don't like the artwork when I receive it?
If you don't like your artwork please let us know immediately by email or telephone and we will discuss options.
Do you buy from Indigenous Art Centres?
Yes. Please let us know if you specifically would like a work from a particular art centre. These are the art centres we currently work with:
Papunya Tula Artists Pty Ltd, NT
Maningrida Arts and Culture, NT
Maruku Arts, NT
Titjikala Arts Centre, NT
Tjanpi Women’s Aboriginal Baskets, NT
Warlukurlangu (Yuendumu) Artists Aboriginal Association, NT
Kaltjiti Arts & Crafts, SA
Warringarri Aboriginal Arts, WA
Warmun Art Centre, WA
Yaruman Art & Culture Centre, WA
Apart from Art Centres, where else do you get the art from?
There are many artists, particularly from the Utopia region of the Northern Territory, who do not work within the art centre structure as there are no art centres within the Utopia region.
In the case of independent artists we use our network of contacts who have long term well established relationships with various artists.
Authenticity
Almost every painting comes with a Certificate of Authenticity. Certificates of Authenticity are not usually provided for works 30x30cm and smaller - in this case we provide a profile of the artist wherever this information is available.
The Certificate of Authenticity includes details regarding the name and language group of the artist, the size and title of the work. We will also provide you with any other information we have on the artist.
The Artery is an Identeart Accredited Gallery. Identeart is a Federal Government initiative where artworks are catalogued on a centrally held database and the information held in perpetuity by the Australian Government.
Hanging of artworks - which way is up?
Some paintings are directional and some are not - ask us for advice.
