Description
Like his brother, Walala Tjapaltjarri, Thomas paints aspects of the Tingari Cycle which are associated with the many sacred sites of his Country – such as Wilkinkarra, Maruwa, Tarrku, Njami and Yarrawangu, to name a few. These are locations of significant rockholes, sandhills, sacred mountains and water soakage’s in the Gibson Desert. Here, he has painted his traditional 'Tingari' Dreaming using a contemporary, sorbet coloured palette - an unusual and unique expression.P> During the Tjukurrpa (Creation Era) Tingari ancestors gathered at a series of sites for Initiation Ceremonies. They traveled vast stretches of the country, performing rituals at specific sites that in turn created the diverse natural features of the environment. Further detail than this is not shared with the uninitiated. These are Dreaming stories known and shared only by initiated Pintupi men.
Thomas can be said to use shapes and symbolic lines in a more organic way than his younger brother to represent aspects of the sacred Tingari Cycle and the epic journey of Ancestors of the Tjukurrpa (Creation Era). Thomas was a member of the last group of indigenous Australians to make contact with western civilization in 1984. He and his group made world headlines – becoming known as “The Last of the Nomads”.
