Description

Molly Jugadai Napaltjarri is the eldest daughter of Narputta Jugadai Nangala. She was born in the bush 3 km west of the Ikuntji community in 1954. Molly played a key role in establishing the Ikuntji Art Centre in 1992 and has been a staunch supporter and practicing artist at the studio ever since. Molly Jugadai, also known as Maluya, paints the Dreaming related to her Napaltjarri skin group, and tells the stories of her country, and people, who they believe were the first to inhabit the earth. These Napaltjarri women would travel the lands during the day and night, hunting for various foods and discovering the natural landforms in the vast desert of Kintore, in Northern Australia. One of Molly’s stories is the Seven Sisters Dreaming. It is said that as seven sisters were travelling across the Country they discovered they were being followed by an evil Tjakamarra man – ‘Wati-Nyiru’ who sought to seduce the sisters and take them as his own. The sisters were frightened and tried to hide, but Wati-Nyiru was a master of disguise and too clever for them. The only way to escape was through a fire to the Milky Way where they became the seven stars of the Constellation ‘Taurus’ and they now rest safely and watch over the women on earth. Wati-Nyiru (the Tjakamarra man) followed them to the heavens and became the star ‘Orion’ and was no longer able to harm them.
