Description

Rex was born in Sydney in 1968 to a mother from the Kamilaroi area of NSW. She was from Walgett in NSW and part of the large Walford family from that area.

Rex was adopted at the age of three months and grew up at Nyngan; a farming community in central west NSW. Rex always knew his birth mother and her family lived not too far away but didn’t know where and he didn’t have any contact with them at this time.

Following an introduction to his birth mother and extended indigenous family later in life, Rex began to explore his interest in his traditional culture and developed his own style of dot art.

Still influenced by his affinity to the land, Rex paints ‘Water Dreaming’ "Milky Way Dreaming' and ‘Star Dreaming’ in a contemporary and stylised manner.

Rex has an innate passion and skill for painting – like most indigenous painters he has never received any formal art training.

Rex’s paintings are a unique response to his life – they are contemporary paintings of environment and landscape expressed through an innate skill for precision dot work.

In this painting, Rex depicts 'Sun Dreaming' which is representation of his relationship with the land and its natural forms. Rex's paintings are of a contemporary and stylised manner and are executed with such precise dot work and carefully chosen colour.
