Description
This series by Rex, a 'TRYPTICH' (set of 3) - each piece measuring 182 x 31cm, is a new direction for Rex. 2010 has seen a ground-breaking development in Rex's style as he experiments with different methods and ways in which he can convey his Dreamings. Always with a modern home/ interior in mind, Rex aims to diversify and change his style, while maintaining the connection with his Aboriginal heritage and staying true to his background.
Rex Winston Walford was born in 1968 and is a member of the Gamilaraay (also spelt Kamilaroi) language group of northern New South Wales. Rex was adopted by a white family at the age of three months and grew up at Nyngan; a farming community in central west NSW. Rex always knew his birth mother and her family lived not too far away but didn’t know where and he didn’t have any contact with them at this time.
Following an introduction to his birth mother and extended indigenous family later in life, Rex began to explore his interest in his traditional culture and developed his own style of dot art.
Still influenced by his affinity to the land, Rex paints ‘Water Dreaming’ "Milky Way Dreaming' and ‘Star Dreaming’ in a contemporary and stylised manner.
Rex has an innate passion and skill for painting – like most indigenous painters he has never received any formal art training.
