Description
Mary Rumble Petyarre was born circa 1957 in the Utopia region of Central Australia. Mary is the sister of Katie Rumble and her extended family includes well renowned artists Gloria Petyarre and Gracie Morton Pwerle.
Mary paints a number of dreamings including Women’s Ceremonial sites, My Country, Bush Medicine (like her sister Katie) and Body Paint Designs. Mary’s style is bold, vibrantly coloured and linear.
This piece shows "Bush Medicine Plant" in this piece, using vibrant and contrasting colours which she combines into one short , precise brush stroke creating a layering and moving effect. The ‘Bush Medicine’ refers to a species of Acacia, which is used as part of indigenous traditional healing. Women collect leaves from this plant and boil them to extract the resin. The resin is then mixed with kangaroo fat. The resulting paste is used to heal bites, wounds, cuts and rashes and can be used as an insect repellant.
The leaves from the plant can also be brewed to make a tea and this is used to alleviate the systems of a flu.
