Description
Queenie is a senior woman of the Alyawarre speakers, she paints her ceremonial Body Paint Design or 'awelye' for ceremony. These designs are painted onto the chest, breasts, arms and thighs. Powders ground from red and yellow ochres and clays, charcoal and ash are used for this body paint and either applied with a flat stick or with the fingers. The women sing songs associated with their body paint or 'awelye' as they each take their turn to be 'painted up'. Women perform awelye ceremonies to demonstrate respect for their country and the total well-being and health of their community.
