Description
Emily was born circa 1930 in the Utopia region, Northern Territory. Emily comes from an incredibly artistic family; her three sisters are all painters, one being the acclaimed artist Minnie Pwerle. Emily paints ‘Awleye-Atnwengerrp’ – a body paint design painted onto the chests of women during ceremony. In 2004, Minnie and her three sisters, Molly, Emily and Galya began painting together. The collaborative paintings produced were explosively vibrant and energetic. Emily’s paintings can be described as chaotic and purely abstract. She is an exceptional colourist, who shows confidence in developing a unique style and interpretation of ‘Women’s Ceremony’ that is incredibly important to ‘Awleye’ women. Emily's paintings refer to women's business and ceremonies associated with ritual knowledge. The complexity of her work is achieved by painting overlapping symbols until a web of lines is formed on the canvas, here she refers to the patterns women paint on each other's bodies for Women's Ceremonies.
