Helen Rubuntja was born in 1965 at Ammaroo Station, located approximately 320km North East of Alice Springs in the Northern Territory. Helen is the daughter of prominent artist Nelly Rubuntja Petyarre, who taught Helen how to paint and has passed on traditional Dreaming stories associated with their family and the land. Not only is Helen the cousin of Mervyn Rubuntja who is a well regarded water colour landscape artist, she is also the niece of Wenton Rubuntja, who was both an artist and a key figure in the land rights movement.
