Born in 1943, Katie Kemarre lives in the Utopia region of the Northern Territory, a region 300km north east of Alice Springs. In the mid 1970s this area became Aboriginal freehold land of the Alyawarr and Anmatyerr people. Correspondingly at this time, the Aboriginal art movement ‘Utopia Women’s Batik Group’ was introduced. Katie was among this group, taught to tie-dye and batik on silk. She later participated in the ‘Utopia: A Picture Story’ exhibition, which featured 88 female artists from Utopia. The ‘Utopia’ exhibition toured internationally to wide acclaim.
