Janet’s paintings depict her totem ‘Bush Yam’ for which she is one of the custodians within her culture. Bush yam vegetables grow beneath the earth, the leaf-like patterns shown in the painting depict the yam flower above the ground.
The yams are an important food source in traditional aboriginal culture of the Utopia region and are one of the few vegetables that can be found in the arid conditions of central Australia.
