Willy Tjungarrayi's paintings characteristically represents two linked themes: the Tingari Song Cycles relating to the travels and resting places of the Tingari Men in the Tjukurrpa (creation era), and depicting the surrounding sandhills of the Lake Mackay, Haasts Bluff and Lake MacDonald area. These stories are sacred; only those initiated and entitled to them know the full meaning.

The Tingari are said to have journeyed across the land performing ceremonies and creating the features of the earth and laws of the Pintupi people.
