Petrina’s paintings depict the seed of the Bush Yam, represented by the fine white dot work. The thick colourful brushwork represents the yam itself.

The bush yam grows underground with a vine-like shrub above ground that grows up to one metre high. It is normally found on spinifex sand plains and produces a large pink or yellow flower after the summer rain. The yam is much like a sweet potato and can be eaten raw or cooked, and is still a staple food for the desert Aboriginal people where it can be harvested at any time of the year.
