The Bush yam grows underground with a vine-like shrub that grows above ground up to 1 meter high. The Bush Yam is normally found on spinifex sand plains and produces a large pink or yellow flower after the summer rain. The Bush Yam is much like a sweet potato and can be eaten raw or cooked. It is still a staple food for the desert Aboriginal people where it can be harvested at any time of the year.
