Naomi lives in the Utopia region of the Northern Territory.
Her Dreaming is the Bush Yam. The yam is a tuber-vegetable and is one of the most stable types of bush tucker gathered in the Utopia region as it can be harvested year-round. The yam has a complex root system that can spread up to ten meters from its stalk. The plant has bright green leaves and yellow flowers and branches out over a large area. The women traditionally collect the bush foods, and they do so by finding the plant, tracing the leaves into the center, and then using digging sticks to dig up the yam. Women also hold ceremonies to celebrate the bush yam and to promote the continued growth of this staple food.
In Naomi’s paintings, the small dotting represents the seeds of the yams
