The bush yam is a staple bush food that grows beneath the earth and is gathered by women. Traditional ceremonies are often performed to celebrate the importance of the bush yam, as well as to promote the plant’s growth. This painting references the yam itself, which has flowers that bloom only in particular seasons. The yam vine runs along the ground for several meters, allowing the women to follow this long vine back to the main centre point, indicating this is the location of the yam to dig up.
