Marie Ryder was born in 1966 in the small community of Santa Teresa, located approximately 85km south east of Alice Springs in the Northern Territory. A former gold mining town and Catholic mission in the 1950s, Santa Teresa is also known as Ltyentye Apurte in Eastern Arrernte language. Today, Marie mainly lives at Mulga Bore Outstation, 230kms north east of Alice Springs with her husband Kevin Bird (grandson of Ada Bird Petyarre) and four children.
