Janet's paintings depict her totem, Bush Yam, for which she is one of the custodians. The yams are an important food source in traditional Aboriginal culture of the Utopia region and are one of the few vegetables that can be found in the arid conditions of central Australia. Bush yam vegetables grow beneath the earth, but the leaf-like patterns shown in her paintings depict the yam flower above the ground.
