Tanya predominantly paints stories associated with bush foods and aspects of ‘Awelye’ or women’s business that is interrelated with bush foods. Dreaming stories associated with bush foods are not only important in terms of their subsistence role in everyday life, but also take on additional cultural significance as demonstrations of knowledge of country. Staple bush foods such as ‘anwekety’ (bush plum), ‘anemangkerr’ (bush tomato/melon) or ‘anaty’ (bush yam), for example, are traditionally gathered by women with ceremonies performed to celebrate their importance to the community as well as to promote the plant’s growth.
