Angelina is best known for her unique representation of the ‘Atham-areny’ story. Loosely translated, Atham-areny means ‘country where fire does not belong’, and refers to a special ceremony performed by women of the community with a witch doctor, in order to ward off the sickness associated with the hill-dwelling creatures. As Angelina describes:

The Atham-areny are tiny spirits of the Country. They are colourless and live in the places where the fire does not belong. It is important that the babies and children stay by the fire. If the Atham-areny touches you – you will feel sick. If this happens a witch doctor must come and dance the sickness out. This painting depicts the women painted up for ceremony to dance these sprits away. FREE STRETCHING ON THIS ARTWORK
